Storage Wall

March 26, 2010

Next to our very cumbersome steel flat file (shown at the bottom right of the pic below), our biggest dilemma in moving to the new space was dealing with our four EXPEDIT shelving units.

In the old space, these were used for storage, as well as room dividers, but with half the space in the shop needing to be dedicated to our retail display, there was really nowhere else to go but up:

what the #*@% is going on in there?

Since the renovations began back in mid-February, the front of the shop has been covered up with kraft paper – so as to not offend anyone with all our dust and messiness. Last week, I felt like the front door (at least) needed a bit of pretty-ing up, not to mention a little brand recognition, so that our neighborhood would have a tiny indication of what’s to come.

In the coming weeks leading up to the grand opening, there’ll be a lot more changes to the appearance of the storefront. As residents of this neighborhood ourselves, we always want to know what’s going on with empty spaces and new businesses, so, in turn, we plan on giving our neighbors (and future customers) more information during the month of April while we’re all waiting for opening day!

Moving Day | March 16, 2010

packing up the studio

This week was the big move. We spent most of the weekend, and all day Monday, packing up the studio… It was pretty shocking just how much there was to pack. Besides the large furniture pieces (including a several-hundred-pound steel flat file), we filled over 30 banker’s boxes with inventory!

Needless to say, we hired movers to help – Affordable Moving Co. here in Chicago came on Tuesday morning and made quick work of our giant piles and lumbering furniture pieces.

The truck that the mover’s brought was pretty big… and it was completely filled. Holy crap.

After a lunch break, and a short 5-minute drive, the truck arrived at the new space. We went from a very full truck, to a very full shop in just under 3 hours:

Such a long day, but once it was all said and done, it feels great to be completely moved into our new space. Negotiating the two spaces hasn’t been two difficult, but it’s always nice to have one less thing to worry about.

Stay tuned for more as the space progresses!

The bathroom has a tiny vanity that came with a gigantic mirror. The proportion is a touch oppressive, so we need to find a nice, simple mirror to complement the small space.

All Quiet

March 1, 2010

The floors are done. The lighting is installed. There are only a few more small things to do before the space is 100% ready for us to start moving in.

Right now we’re able to go into the space and really start seeing it as the future store. Picturing where the checkout counter will be is so much easier when there’s not a 10-foot-high scaffold in the middle of the space.

The bathroom is almost ready, with only a vanity to install before that’s done. New glass block has been put in where an old window used to be.

There is a window way up at the top of one of the walls, where the previous tenant had an air conditioning unit installed. We aren’t really AC types, but then again we have no idea how hot this space might get in the summer. So for now, we’ll clean it up, leave it in, and do something fun in the window right next to it.
